Barcelona only Spaniards to win - Germans show no dominance Freitag, 24. November 2000 / 11:11 Uhr
Hamburg - Barcelona were the only Spanish side to win their first leg of the UEFA Cup's third round, while none of Germany's five clubs could produce a victory Thursday night.
Besides Barcelona, Bordeaux, PSV Eindhoven and Porto also took large steps to making the fourth round with convincing victories.
The Germans have the largest contingent remaining - seven teams - but they could only produce three draws and two defeats Thursday night.
After Hertha Berlin's scoreless draw with Inter Milan Tuesday night at home, 1860 Munich and SV Hamburg followed suit with matches against Italians on Thursday.
Serie A leaders Roma defeated Hamburg 1-0 on a fluke goal from Gianni Guigou, whose 33rd-minute blast was slightly deflected and misjudged by Hamburg keeper Hans-Joerg Butt. The Germans could not convert any of their chances as Butt held off a vicious Roman attack the rest of the way.
Two-time UEFA Cup champions Parma jumped ahead of 1860 Munich 2-0 after 10 minutes in dense fog at Ennio Tardini stadium thanks to goals by Stephan Appiah and French international Johan Micoud.
But Munich pulled one back 20 minutes from time through an excellent piece of dribbling by Roman Tyce and Markus Beierle completed the 2-2 comeback in the closing seconds.
Bayer Leverkusen needed heroics of their own to squeeze out a 4-4 draw against Greek guests AEK Athens. In a see-saw match, Ulf Kirsten's headers (24,42) reversed a 1-0 deficit before the break.
Fernando Navas tallied seconds after the restart, but Robert Kovac put Leverkusen back ahead on 48 minutes. Vassilios Tsartas converted a penalty just before the hour and Navas beat an offside trap ten minutes from time to give the Greeks back the lead.
It appeared they would take a road win back for the home leg in two weeks time until Carsten Ramelow's blast just cleared the near post for the 4-4 result.
Fellow Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart snatched an away draw 2-2 at Feyenoord Rotterdam on Ioan Viorel Ganea's tally 15 minutes from time.
Bordeaux would not let Werder Bremen be so lucky. After Claudio Pizarro put the Germans ahead on 16 minutes, the French scored four unanswered goals.
Germany's seventh team, Kaiserslautern, play their first leg match against Glasgow Rangers on November 30.
Eindhoven, freshly dropped from the Champions League, put up three goals in the first half - Arnold Brugginck (5) and a double by Mateja Kezman (15,44) - and coasted the rest of the way, 3-0 at home against Greek side PAOK Thessaloniki.
Barcelona were also relegated from the Champions League to the UEFA Cup, and made sure Club Brugge felt it at home. After the runaway Belgian leaders dominated early play, Rivaldo gave Barca the lead against the run of play on 23 minutes and Patrick Kluivert made it 2-0 just eight minutes later.
That took the stuffing out of the Belgians and their packed crowd and Barca coasted the rest of the way. Celta Vigo and Rayo Vallecano were both able to capture scoreless away draws in cold conditions, Celta at Shaktar Donetsk and European football newcomers Rayo in 15 degrees below zero temperatures at Lokomotiv Moscow.
Alaves had a frustrating night, being held 1-1 at home by Rosenborg Trondheim. Spanish league top scorer Javi Moreno gave the debutants the lead in the 55th minute, but the Norwegians took advantage of defensive errors and Frode Johnsen made it 1-1 on 78 minutes.
Espanyol lacked punch up front and lost 2-0 at home to Porto on goals by Ljubinko Drulovic (47) and Jose Pena (70).
Alexios Alexandris twice saved Olympiakos Piraeus from a home loss to Liverpool as the Greek striker equalised on 65 and 90 minutes for a 2-2 draw.
Nantes received an own goal by Lausanne Sports on 73 minutes to equalise 3-3 and Nicolas Gillet struck the gamewinner three minutes from time as the French side held on for a 4-3 home victory.
Croatian side NK Osijek won their home leg against Slavia Prague 2-0 thanks to goals by Almir Turkovic (32) and Mato Neratljek (82). (la/dpa)
